Lac Jewelry

Lac jewelry, a traditional craft that originated in the state of Rajasthan, dates back to the royal era of this region.

Lac is an organic substance extracted from trees. Its history is associated with the famous Lakshagriha palace which was built 4000 years ago by the Kauravas to kill Pandavas. This palace was build using all the natural materials including lac.

Jewelry made using lac, a natural resin, have been part of the Indian tradition for many centuries as it was considered pure and auspicious. This traditional craft is practiced by a small community of skilled craftsmen and involves intricate handwork. They go through an elaborate process of melting, rolling and adding color to the lac base. For finishing, desired shape is given and base jewelry is then embellished with beads, imitation pearls, and cubic zirconia stones. Lightness, variety of colors, delicate sheen and beauty make Lac jewelry a perfect accessory to add charm to ethnic attire.

Out of the many precious handicrafts of India, Lac jewelry is becoming a dying craft due to not enough people knowing the technique to make it.
